Berapa bilik tidur?

As students, most of us live in apartments near campus. But our families have homes (usually) somewhere else.  Since the places we live in are part of our daily lives, let's try to describe them.  We can tell the address, count the rooms, name the colors the rooms are painted, talk about the contents of the rooms, say how many cars fit in the garage. We can tell whether the rooms and the windows are big or small. If we have pets, we can talk about them.  Remember...

Berapa harga/ Harga berapa?

We have studied numbers and asking about quantities.  We can now work on more complicated questions.  These are questions you will hear everyday. People in Malaysia and Brunei always ask about your age, and if you buy something they will want to know the price (so they can tell you that you paid too much, Ha ha). These are questions you ask with berapa.

Berapa umur?   'How old are you?' (How much is your age?)

Umur saya 64 tahun.  'My age is 64 years.'

So we heard in c...

Ikut jalan mana?

I have been to language teaching conferences, where "experts" have belittled the idea that learners of foreign language should learn how to give directions in the language they are studying.  They laughed and said "Who would ask a foreigner directions to anything?"
I wonder what kind of world these "experts" live in.  In my own experience in Switzerland, Germany and
Holland, local people have often asked me directions in either German (Zurich, Frankfurt) or Dutch (Leiden).  I...

Berapa orang adik-beradik?

Malaysians are very interested in families and family relationships.  One of the first questions they usually ask is "How many of you siblings are there." Berapa orang adik-beradik? 'How many brothers and sisters do you have (including yourself))?'  For example, if you have a sister and two brothers, the answer is Empat orang. 'There are four of us (siblings).'

When Malaysians continue to ask, it will be about the family (keluarga).  They will want to know something a...
