Borang Peraduan

Last Friday, we looked at Borang Peraduan (Dutch Lady) and many of you may have already guessed that 'borang' means 'form'. And some of you have guessed correctly that it was a contest form. If so, 'peraduan' should mean 'contest' or 'competition'.

Some of you may recalled that I have asked a question , "Borang peraduan apa?" {What type of contest form?}

Most of you answered correctly, " Borang peraduan Minum Banyak Menang Banyak".  { Drink a lot Win a lot Contest form}

* menang-win { NIU menang Homecoming Game}

Another question asked in class was  " Borang peraduan ada maklumat apa?"

These were some of the answers that you have given in class:

1) bila peraduan?
2) hadiah apa?
3) nama, umur, alamat, nombor telefon...
4) gambar

*hadiah- prize, gift, present, award

Below are some of the questions you have answered in the worksheet:

A) " Boleh menang apa dalam Peraduan Minum Banyak Menang Banyak?"
  {What can you win in the Drink A Lot Win A Lot contest?}

One of you answered " wang tunai."

**In this context, "wang tunai" refers to cash prizes. Usually, "wang tunai" means cash.

Another student answered. " Termos eksklusif Dutch Lady " { Exclusive Dutch Lady thermos }

B) "Ada berapa langkah?"
  {How many steps are there?} [ * langkah- step]

 "Ada lima langkah" is the correct answer. {There are five steps}

However, if you are referring to a specific numbered step, the number comes after "langkah".

{E.g. Langkah empat- Lengkapkan borang penyertaian ini}

Other words we have learned in class:

1) Negeri: State (Negeri Illinois, negeri Indiana, negeri Melaka)

2) Negara: country ( negara Malaysia)

3)penuh: Full {name penuh- full name} However, do not use "penuh" to say you're full after a big meal. Direct translation in a different context won't work. There is another word for that. " Kenyang"

4)pejabat: office { nombor pejabat: office telephone number}

5)bimbit: In this context (forms), bimbit means cellphone number. Sometimes, 'no. telefon bimbit/ nombor telefon bimbit" which has the same meaning is used. " Telefon bimbit" means cellphone. "bimbit" by itself means to carry or portable.

6) jumlah: total

7) nilai: value or { bernilai means to have the value of}

8) utama: { we came across " Hadiah Utama" while discussing about contest forms. Utama means main or major. So, hadiah utama is the main prize.}

9) Isi - to fill  { E.g. Isi borang which means fill out the form.}
