14 Oktober
Berapa bilik tidur?
As students, most of us live in apartments near campus. But our families have homes (usually) somewhere else. Since the places we live in are part of our daily lives, let's try to describe them. We can tell the address, count the rooms, name the colors the rooms are painted, talk about the contents of the rooms, say how many cars fit in the garage. We can tell whether the rooms and the windows are big or small. If we have pets, we can talk about them. Remember Muscat?
Jocelyn: Rumah Glynnis besar!
Glynnis: Ya, rumah keluarga saya besar dan ada 2 ekor kuching di rumah itu.
-------------
In earlier classes, we learned that when we count people we use orang to count. In English we don't use a counter for people, but in Malay we usually do use orang.
Di ruang kelas ini ada lima belas orang mahasiswa dan dua orang guru bahasa.
In this class there are 15 students and two language teachers.
Di stadium NIU pada 15 Oktober ada 21,230 orang penonton.
In the NIU stadium on October 15 there were 21,230 spectators.
To count people, we must use the counter orang. To count animals, we must use the counter ekor. For exmple:
Di rumah dia ada 8 ekor anjing.
In her house there are eight dogs.
Dia sudah tangkap 7 ekor tikus di dapurnya!
He has already caught 7 mice in his kitchen!
Seekor kucing sudah cukup.
One cat is enough.
In English, we use the word head to count cattle, flock to count groups of birds or sheep, school to count groups of fish. So in Malay we also use special words to count certain things. So far we have studied only orang for humans and ekor for animals.
Note in English, head also refers to the top part of the body, but we use it to count cattle! In Malay ekor also refers to the last part of an animal body, the tail! But we use it to count animals.
Nak beli berapa ekor ikan keli?
How many catfish do you want to buy?
But we can also say:
Ekor anjing itu panjang.
That dog's tail is long.
-------------
We learned or reviewed a few words:
dapur 'kitchen' (It can also mean 'stove'.)
mesin pencuci pinggan 'dish washer'
bilik air 'bathroom'
bilik mandi 'bathroom'
beranda 'porch'
garaj 'garage'
almari 'cupboard, armoire, clothes cabinet'
besar 'big'
kecil 'small'
panjang 'long'

tikus 'mouse, rat'
ekor 'the counter for animals' Tiga ekor anjing. '3 dogs.'(The word ekor can also mean 'tail'.)
tangkap 'catch, trap'
stadium 'stadium'
mahasiswa 'student at a college or university'. (Students at grade or high schools are not mahasiswa.)
penonton 'spectator, people in an audience, viewer'
