Questions
We can now carry on more complicated discussions because we have learned how to use question words and prepositions, especially:
Siapa 'Who'
Apa 'What'
Ke Mana 'To where?' <ke 'to, towards'
Di Mana 'At where?' <di 'at, in, on'
Siapa nak makan ikan keli goreng? 'Who wants to eat fried catfish?'
Cik Jocelyn nak beli apa? 'What does Jocelyn want to buy?'
Terrence nak pergi ke mana? 'Where does Terrence want to go to?'
Alpkan datang dari mana? 'Where does Alpkan come from?'
Starbucks di mana? 'Where is Starbucks at?'
Answers and statements
When you are asked a question, you can answer briefly or in a longer phrase or sentence.
Siapa nak makan ikan keli goreng?
Derek nak makan ayam goreng. OR JUST Derek.
Cik Jocelyn nak beli apa?
Dia nak beli kasut. OR JUST Kasut.
Mike nak pergi ke mana?
Dia nak pergi ke Holmes. OR JUST Holmes.
Matt datang dari mana?
Dia datang dari Neptune. OR JUST Neptune.
Starbucks di mana?
Starbucks di Lincoln Highway. OR JUST Lincoln Highway.
You should be able to put together long, informative sentences.
Saya nak makan ayam goreng di KFC.
I want to eat fried chicken at KFC.
Dia tak nak beli kasut di Walmart, tak bagus di sana.
She doesn't want to buy shoes at Walmart, they're not good there.
[Remember tak, 'no, not'?? Remember: di sana 'there, over there']
Dia datang dari Malaysia tapi dia tinggal di DeKalb.
She comes from Malaysia but she lives in DeKalb.
[So, tapi means 'but'.]
So when you have conversations in class, you can make statements, give more information.

Selamat belajar
We already knew three question words:
Siapa 'Who'
Apa 'What'
Ke Mana 'To where?'
Now we have learned two more prepositions so we can ask more questions and get more answers:
Dari Mana 'From where?' <dari 'from'
Di Mana 'At where?' <di 'at, in, on'
Joe: Dia datang dari Malaysia. 'She's from Malaysia.'
Shannon: O, dia tinggal di mana? 'Oh, where does she stay?'
Shannon: Dia tinggal di DeKalb. 'She is living in DeKalb.'
Glynnis: Teksi itu dari mana? 'Where is that taxi from?'
Scott: Teksi ini dari Kajang. 'This taxi's from Kajang.'
Glynnis: Siapa pemandu teksi itu? 'Who's the driver of that taxi?'
Scott: Mr. Ho pemandu teksi ini. 'Mr. Ho is the driver of this taxi.'
About reading a receipt.
We were looking at a real taxi receipt from Kajang, a little town in Malaysia, on the first day of class. (It's not too little. It has a commuter train station, two KFCs, a McDonalds, a Pizza Hut, a Domino's, four banks, two shopping centers, two 7-11's, lots of stores, restaurants and shops and buses, a market, two Starbucks, a Baskins Robbins and an open air market.)
On the receipt it had Mr. Ho's name and the number of his license plate. It had an address and a telephone number. And it had spaces for the name of the passenger and for 'from' and 'to'. At the bottom it had Mr. Ho's signature.
resit 'receipt'
teksi 'taxi'
pemandu 'driver'
derebar 'driver'
penumpang 'passenger'
About supermarket ads and furniture ads.
We were looking at some of the ads in a flier printed by Carrefour, a French corporation that builds hypermarts on the scale of Walmart.
We looked at foods from the frozen food section. We saw chilled chicken and fish. And we glanced at the clothing section, including a half page on shoes and slippers.
We already knew ayam, but now we know:
kentang goreng 'fried potatoes, fries'
ayam goreng 'fried chicken'
ikan 'fish'
oren 'orange'
epal 'apple'
tembikai 'watermelon'
pisang 'banana'
aiskrim 'ice-cream'
So we can order a meal at KFC!
Selamat petang
Saya nak makan ayam goreng dan kentang goreng!
Saya nak minum Pepsi.
Terima kasih
kosa kata:
restoran 'restaurant'
kedai 'store'---kedai aiskrim, kedai makan, kedai tv, kedai komputer.
We looked at some clothes. We already knew kasut and beg. But we looked at:
baju 'shirt, blouse'
seluar 'pants, trousers'
selipar 'slipper, sandal'
About apologizing.
We learned how to say excuse me and sorry.
Maaf 'Sorry, I'm sorry'. [literally 'forgive']
Sori 'Sorry' (more colloquial.)
------------------------------------
Sila duduk 'Please sit'
Sila berdiri 'Please stand'
